The Rule in 10 Seconds

Decision Flowchart
Section titled “Decision Flowchart”Ask yourself these questions in order:
- Is it a proper noun? (Tokyo, Google, Sarah) → no article (usually)
- Is it uncountable or plural AND talking generally? → no article (Music is great. Dogs are loyal.)
- Is it specific / already mentioned / only one? → the (the sun, the book I told you about)
- Is it singular countable, first mention, not specific? → a / an (I need a pen — any pen)
Quick Decision
Proper noun → ∅ (nothing) General + uncountable/plural → ∅ Specific / known / unique → the Singular + new + any → a / an
Common Mistakes
Section titled “Common Mistakes”I am Ø teacher.
I am a teacher.
Singular countable noun needs an article.
The life is beautiful.
Ø Life is beautiful.
General/abstract concept = no article.
She plays the piano every day.
She plays the piano every day. ✓ (This one IS correct!)
Musical instruments use 'the' — this is an exception to learn.
I want to buy the phone. Which one?
I want to buy a phone.
Not specific yet = a/an, not the.
He went to the hospital. (US)
He went to Ø hospital. (UK)
Some nouns drop articles in BrE when used for their primary purpose.
Zero Article Rules
Section titled “Zero Article Rules”No article needed with:
- Abstract nouns used generally: Love is blind. Time flies.
- Meals: Let’s have lunch. (but: The lunch was great.)
- Sports & games: I play basketball.
- Languages: She speaks French.
- Most countries: Japan, Brazil, Canada (but: the UK, the US, the Netherlands)
- “Go to” + purpose: go to school, go to work, go to bed
